BIG hART, AN ARTS AND SOCIAL CHANGE ORGANISATION, IS ARTIST IN RESIDENCE AT THE CUTAWAY, BARANGAROO WITH THE CREATIVE PROJECT SKATE.
From February to July, Big hART transforms the Cutaway into an underground creative workshop where skateboarders, musicians, and digital artists collaborate to develop an exhilarating new show called SKATE that combines skateboarding, percussion and projection.

Every few weeks, a section of the show will be presented as a work in progress at events called Transitions – a sneak peek at this brand new performance piece.
On Friday nights and Saturday afternoons, Open Skate sessions welcome anyone, of any skill level, to swing by the Cutaway to skate the space.
If you’re passing by the Cutaway, pop in to see if the team are around and observe the collaboration in action – when SKATE is in the room, the space will be open for audiences to watch the creative process unfold.
Events are free but you do need to register to attend.

Every few weeks, audiences can get a first look at new sections of the show as they are trialled at free public events called Transitions. See what it means to paint with light and sound as skateboarding ignites the stage through responsive technology. And afterwards, you might be lucky enough to skate in the Cutaway.

On Fridays and Saturdays, free Open Skate sessions welcome anyone, of any skill level, to swing by the Cutaway to skate the space, watch sections of the show in progress, and get involved with the creativity of the SKATE project. Meet the artists and skaters, get a behind-the-scenes look at the show, explore the tech, and learn more about the artistry of combining skateboarding, music and light.

About
Big hART is collaborating with Totem Skateboarding to present the SKATE at the Cutaway Holiday Workshop, running daily in the first week of the April school holidays. A demo of SKATE the show kicks off the program, followed by a skateboarding coaching session for beginners.
Totem Skateboarding specialise in skate coaching and events for young people and their workshops offer dynamic, physical and creative skateboarding workshops for participants aged 5 – 15.
All safety and skate gear is provided. Participants must wear enclosed shoes. Booking are essential.

SKATE is a live theatrical performance that showcases the artfulness of skateboarding and the universal language of rhythm in a fusion of music, image and movement, using tracking technology to create a breathtaking sensory experience.
Social enterprise
SKATE is also a social enterprise. All profits from the show will be used to fund projects in disadvantaged communities. Learn more…
